Jennifer of Sighfoo makes warm and snuggly creations! She upcycles sweaters into fun plushie friends and designs fun and comforting clothes. It’s a joy to see her innovative ideas come to life.
Here’s our full interview with Jennifer in her own words:
How did you get started creating your pieces?
I have an art background, but I never sewed anything in my life. I was a graphic designer. A friend of mine needed people to test a simple pattern for a felt ornament and I got hooked!
Soon after I began creating my own plush toys. A few years later I had a baby and that inspired me to use my designs in children’s clothing.
What’s the favorite part of your work/what you make?
I love seeing an idea come to life. I look at one of my sketches or a photo of an animal and I wonder what would this look like as a wool toy?
My little guys are made from recycled sweaters and it’s so fun seeing what I can make with something another person would throw out. Yeah. Give me all your moth eaten shrunken sweaters.
How do you express your creativity through your work?
By creating new and fun creatures. I started out trying to recreate animals and real life objects (I still do), but now I’m exploring my own strange characters that borrow a bit from the fantasy and horror genres.
What brings you joy?
Seeing people young and old enjoying my toys and clothing.
What challenge(s) have you overcome?
I’ve been living with kidney disease since childhood. I’m grateful my dad donated his kidney in 1991. 12 years later, when that transplant failed, my friend from work donated his kidney.
I turned to art to help me get through the difficult times and later turned it into a new career. My friends and family have been an amazing support system. Be an organ donor!
Anything exciting in the works/coming up for you?
A friend inspired me to create digital artwork from my toy designs. Maybe that’s something I will explore more in the future.
What do you wish for the world?
We have so much potential to make the world better. I wish we all had the will and imagination to make this happen.
