Paul Wendt- Full Artist Spotlight

One of our newest local artists to join MADE is Paul Wendt, whose colorful meticulous drawings have been a bright addition to our collection.

Desert motifs and brilliant skies are his speciality but there is always something unique that he brings each time he stops by.

What is your favorite part of the maker’s process?

Interesting question, and I would have to answer “the backside of the mountain”. I
think you’ll find a lot of artists struggle with a blank board or canvas, not unlike a
writer and the dreaded blank sheet of paper. My favorite part of the process is
reaching the point where I can see what I envisioned in the near distance and
then cruising to completion.

How do you go about starting new designs, do you plan ahead or just jump right in?

Sometimes that is decided by a collector asking for a specific piece or if I am
adding some new art to one of my categories on the site, such as MY ARIZONA.
So, I would say there is a fair amount of planning involved.

Do you like a tidy work space or functional chaos?

When I finish a piece I definitely tidy up but when I am in the throes of working,
functional chaos is a good description.

What has been your biggest challenge as a professional artist?

I think finding out who I am as an artist and what stories I want to tell. On my site you will see a variety of images and mediums ranging from graphite and charcoal, to watercolor and colored pencils; there are even a few airbrush works. My imagery has ranged from desert landscapes to gothic and surreal subjects. I have always resisted doing decor art and instead tried to add a bit of an edge or twist to get an emotional response.

What brings you the most joy outside of the studio?

My family mostly. My kids are grown now, starting families of their own and it is
gratifying. I also write a bit and fool around on the guitar.

What do you wish to see in the future to support artist owned small businesses in AZ?

I would like to see all the cities further embrace the artistic community with more
awareness and promotion of Art Districts and events across the Valley.

Anything exciting in the works/coming up for you this year?

Yes, I have just completed another piece for the MADE collection that will be
available soon, also I will have my first work of a new category of Cowboy art under the title NewWest.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I have really enjoyed being part of the family of artists at MADE and I am excited
about the rest of this year and hopefully onward!
